Finding Your Perfect Fit
A Guide to Formal Dressing for Trans Masculine and Non-Binary Individuals
By King and Allen
For many trans masculine and non-binary people, formal wear can feel like navigating a minefield - all too often it can feel like what we envision for ourselves simply doesn't exist. High street suits rarely fit right, and traditional tailors often aren't equipped—or willing—to work with diverse body types.
But formal dressing doesn't have to be a source of stress.
To mark the upcoming Beyond Reflections Festive Fundraiser on December 8th, we have collaborated with experts in the field to bring you some essential styling tips ahead of the main event. With the right approach and knowledge, you can create a look that's authentically you and makes you feel incredible.
Our series kicks off with the brilliant inclusive tailors at King & Allen, with their five essential tips for trans masc and non-binary individuals seeking their perfect formal look:
1. Understanding Fit Over Size
The biggest mistake people make when buying formal wear is focusing on size rather than fit. Off-the-hanger suits are typically cut for one specific body type, which means they're unlikely to work for bodies that don't fit that generic and narrow (minded) mould. Depending on your preferences, a well-fitted suit should skim your body without pulling or gaping, with shoulders that sit naturally and trousers that fall cleanly from the waist.
Trans masculine and non-binary people often have different proportions than traditional menswear accounts for—perhaps broader hips, a different shoulder-to-waist ratio, or a shorter torso. This isn't a flaw in our bodies; it's a flaw in the industry's rigid approach to tailoring.
The solution? When choosing what to wear, look for an outfit that reflects who you are and don’t be afraid to push boundaries - this is about ensuring you feel amazingly, authentically you.
2. Consider Fabric Choices Carefully
If you're on testosterone and are experiencing increased sweating, fabric choices become crucial for comfort throughout long formal events. Natural fibres like wool, cotton, and linen are far more breathable than synthetic materials and help regulate body temperature more effectively.
Suits made from lightweight wool blends work particularly well for winter events like the Beyond Reflections December fundraiser, and it's worth looking into moisture-wicking linings if you're having a suit made or altered. These small adjustments can make an enormous difference to your comfort, without compromising on style. For those concerned about sweat showing through, darker colours and subtle patterns can be more forgiving than light, solid colours.
3. Explore Different Silhouettes
There's no single "right" way to wear a suit. Whether you're buying high street, thrifting, second hand or going bespoke, you can choose the silhouette that makes you feel most yourself—whether that's a sharp, structured look with firm shoulders, a softer line with more drape, or something entirely unique.
For those looking to create a more masculine silhouette, structured shoulders and a straighter cut through the waist can help. However, some non-binary individuals prefer a more fluid, boxy cut that doesn't emphasise any particular gendered shape. Others might want something in between.
Whatever your approach - whether you’re shopping through Vinted/Depop or similar, you’re hitting the charity shops, or you are working with a tailor, either on something brand new or having an item bought ‘off the peg’ adjusted to fit - the key is finding pieces that reflect what you want rather than what you "should" wear.
Don't be afraid to mix elements too—perhaps you want wide-leg trousers with a cropped jacket, or a waistcoat that sits a certain way. It's your suit, and it should reflect your own unique, personal style.
4. Finding the Right Support (Whatever Your Budget)
If you have the budget and want to splash out, finding the right tailor isn't just about their technical skill—it's about finding someone who creates a safe, affirming space where you feel comfortable being measured and fitted. This is particularly important if you're wearing a binder or have concerns about dysphoria during fittings.
Look for tailors who explicitly advertise their inclusivity and have experience working with LGBTQIA+ clients. Don't be afraid to ask questions upfront about their approach.
A good tailor will understand that being fitted for a suit can leave you feeling vulnerable and they will work with you to make the process as comfortable as possible—whether that means being mindful of language, offering private fitting rooms, or being flexible about how measurements are taken. Many trans and non-binary people report postponing important events simply because they couldn't find the appropriate formal wear or they felt uncomfortable in traditional tailoring environments.
5. Staying Comfortable Throughout the Event
With the Beyond Reflections fundraiser taking place in December, temperature regulation and comfort are key considerations—especially if you're binding. Indoor venues can get warm and stuffy, particularly during dinner and dancing, so here are some tips:
Consider your binding strategy: If you're planning to bind for the event, think about whether you'll bind all day or just for the evening. Giving yourself breaks earlier in the day can help with comfort later on.
Layer strategically: A waistcoat over your shirt gives you the option to remove your jacket without losing the formal look, helping you regulate temperature as the evening heats up.
Take breaks: Don't feel you need to stay in the main room constantly. Step outside for fresh air when you need it—your comfort and wellbeing come first.
Have a backup plan: If possible, bring a slightly looser shirt or consider a well-fitted sports bra as an alternative if binding becomes uncomfortable partway through the event.
Remember, the goal is to enjoy the evening while feeling authentically yourself.
